Uganda Horseback Safari

RIDE THE RIVER NILE

What to Expect

Uganda horse safari: one of Africa's most unexpected rides

Most riders never think of Uganda. That is precisely what makes it so extraordinary. This is off the beaten track in the truest sense. A country of lush equatorial green, red clay roads, misty rainforest, and one of the most iconic rivers on earth running through all of it. Riding here feels like discovering Africa before anyone else did.

The Nile Horseback Safari follows the banks of the River Nile north from its source at Jinja, through sugar cane and tea plantations, traditional villages, jungle edges, and open farmland that breaks into long, exhilarating gallops. The landscape changes constantly. So does your sense of what a horseback safari can be.

The operators behind the Uganda Nile horse safari

Nile Horseback Safaris was built from nothing by Natalie McComb and TJ Lonsdale on the banks of the Nile near Jinja. Natalie, a New Zealand-born equestrian champion, arrived in Uganda and carved a horse operation out of jungle. The local community had never encountered horses. Not one person on the team knew how to ride, how to groom, how to handle them.

Natalie and TJ taught them everything. From the beginning. How to care for a horse, how to train one, how to read one. The people who guide you through the plantations and along the Nile today are the same community who learned alongside those first horses years ago. That is not a marketing story. It is the actual history of this place, visible in every confident guide who rides beside you.

What that history produces in practice is something rare: a team completely at home in this landscape, with these horses, and with the people in every village you ride through. The horses reflect it too. Thoroughbreds, Irish Drafts, and crosses, all trained to be bombproof in the full noise of rural Uganda. Trucks, children, boda bodas, livestock. Nothing unsettles them because nothing is unfamiliar.

Riding the River Nile: what the Uganda horse safari covers

From Jinja the terrain is varied and constantly surprising. Fast canters along red dirt roads through rural farmland. Slower rides through the edges of the Mabira rainforest where Mangabey monkeys watch from the trees. Riding past schoolchildren who run alongside the horses, wide-eyed and laughing. Swimming with your horse in the Nile itself, one of those moments that simply cannot be manufactured anywhere else.

Accommodation ranges from eco-lodges with panoramic views across the Nile to a remote island camp reached only by boat, with rapids on all sides. Rustic, memorable, and completely immersive.

For those who want to extend the experience, gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest pairs naturally with the riding safari. Two bucket list experiences in one extraordinary trip. Gorilla permits sell out up to a year in advance, so early planning matters.

Who is the Uganda Nile horseback safari suited for?

This ride suits confident intermediate to advanced riders who want something genuinely different. It is not a wildlife safari in the traditional sense. There are no big five encounters from the saddle. What Uganda offers instead is cultural depth, physical variety, and the rare feeling of riding through a country that most equestrians have never considered.

If you are newer to African riding, the Kenya horseback safari at Rocky Hollow may be a better starting point. We are happy to talk through which destination fits your experience and what you are looking for.

Helpful Information

What to wear on a Uganda horseback safari?

Uganda sits on the equator. It is hot, humid, and at times muddy. Lightweight technical fabrics work better here than natural fibres. Breathable breeches, a moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt for sun protection, and a waterproof layer that packs small are the essentials. Earth tones still apply, both for practical and aesthetic reasons. A buff is non-negotiable against dust and insects.

Leave anything precious at home. This is a ride for clothes that can get wet, muddy, and ridden hard.
