SOUTH AFRICA | HORIZON LODGE

What to Expect

The Horizon Lodge Experience

The South Africa (Horizon) is a slower-paced safari, ideal for families looking for an out-of-box adventure. My son and I took this safari together after leaving Botswana and it offered the perfect “wind-down” from a more intense experience.

The location overlooks a beautiful lake surrounded by the bush on a large conservation site. There’s something for every level of rider– from log-jumping to polo. On hot afternoons, you can ride bareback across the lake, or take a refreshing dip after a day of riding.

During our stay, the herd of approximately 90 free-roaming horses meandered across the property, greeting us daily, letting us make fond memories with these beautiful animals. For anyone nervous about getting too up-close-and-personal with African wildlife, you can experience hippos, giraffes, zebras, plains antelopes, caracal, brown hyenas and aardvark from a safe distance, avoiding the more dangerous lions and elephants.

South Africa styling & packing tips

Stick to khakis and neutral tones—on this intrepid bush safari, blending into the landscape is part of the experience. While this isn’t Big Five country, you’ll still encounter wildlife, and bright colors can break the sense of immersion (and rarely look chic in photos). Classic safari looks in breathable natural fibers like cotton and linen will keep you cool and comfortable, while evoking that timeless sense of adventure. Dressing with the environment in mind helps you feel connected to the land and the rhythm of the ride. This ride takes you through Bosveld terrain—bushy, with dry grasses and thorny trees—so durability and comfort matter.

Good breeches are essential, and long sleeves will protect you from scratches. Since it’s a lodge-based safari, you can bring extra pieces for comfort and downtime. Expect cool mornings, hot days, and a chance to truly unwind. You can swim across the lake with your horse bareback—a magical moment—so pack something you’re happy to get wet in. There’s also a pool at the lodge for proper lounging, so don’t forget a swimsuit and a few pieces that feel more resort than rugged.
