BOTSWANA | CHA CHA METSI

What to Expect

The Cha Cha Metsi Adventure

The whole Botswana Macatoo experience is just so completely out of Africa. Imagine: arriving by twin engine plane to the backdrop of golden savannah plains with a safari jeep waiting to collect you. You drive to the campsite, where tablescapes await you draped in luxurious traditional cream tents. Due to wild game roaming the site at night, guides are armed and escort you to your sleeping quarters which are camouflaged under classic green African canvas. And all before the riding even begins.

I was lucky enough to experience this safari with my 16 year old son. Watching him encounter wild life each day as we rode through the Okavango Delta on extremely forward (super fast) horses, was not only thrilling – but filled me with pride.

The landscape itself is difficult for vehicles to enter, making horseback one of the only options to experience large swathes of the Delta and its varied wildlife. From horseback you can encounter elephants, giraffes, hippos, zebras, buck, buffalo and even lions and leopards. Thrilling, splashy gallops through the floodwaters under the blazing orange African sun, are the ultimate way to cool down on this safari that truly transports you to another world and another time.

Helpful Information

Botswana styling & packing tips

Stick to khakis and neutral earth tones – on this intrepid safari, you’re likely to encounter wild animals that will be frightened of bright colours which is not what one wants. And sticking out of the environment like a sore thumb won’t make for particularly stylish social media content, either!

Blend into the African landscape – try to dress in a way that is respectful of the natural environment. Classic safari looks with natural fibres like cottons and linens always makes me feel the part.

That said, you don’t have to limit yourself only to traditional safari wear. I often mix in pieces from non-riding brands — as long as they match the mood and palette of the trip: think earthy tones, natural textures, and silhouettes that move with you. The key is lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton, which make all the difference for comfort in the saddle and under the sun. I also love accessories that balance style and function, like a small holster bag or a vest with secure pockets — perfect for keeping essentials like sunscreen, lip balm, and your phone close at hand without disrupting the rhythm of the ride.
